As you can see in all these pictures very often nothing happens if you fly without the cockpit canopy. Depending on the airplane it might be official procedure to open the canopy for takeoff and landing.
All of these pictures show airplanes which lost or opened opened their cockpit in flight or took off without a canopy. Non of these airplanes crashed.
