What happens if one of an airliner’s engines won’t shut off and it needs to land?

Qantas 32 was an A380 which had an issue in flight with one engine (number #2, left side inboard engine). The engine basically exploded with an uncontained failure which shot engine turbine parts out through the engine casing, and through the left wing.

This not only caused engine #2 to stop running, but also punctured the fuel tank, and the electrical bundle controls that take the signals from the cockpit and flight computers to the outer engine and several flight controls such as the slats.

Upon landing, the flight crew found that they could not shut down the engine #1 (because the fuel/shutdown switch in the cockpit was no longer connected to the engine!)

And so the Fire Department sprayed fire-retardant foam into the engine for about 3 hours, at which point the engine flamed out.
