A Turkish Airlines flight carrying passengers from Istanbul to Jakarta on Tuesday had to make a diversion Medan’s Kualanamu Airport where it made an emergency landing.
Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police Chief Sigit Dani Setiyono confirmed that flight TK56 was forced to make a divertion because of the activities of an unruly passenger.
Footage of the incident which was recorded by another passenger which has gone viral online, showed a male passenger taking swings at the flight’s cabin crew.
Police have identified the passenger as
a 48-year-old Indonesian pilot who works for Batik air, an Indonesian carrier which is a subsidiary of Lion Air Group. The pilot was said to be in a personal trip to Turkey.
The pilot was said to have too much to drink on board and got drunk and started acting under the influence of alcohol. He refused to observe order and started throwing punches at the cabin crew members when asked to conduct himself.
Lion Air has confirmed has since confirmed that he is their employee, but stressed that his actions do not reflect the values of the company.
