Ghana to launch national carrier in 2023

During the pandemic, the West African country Ghana stuck to the plan to build a new national airline.

According to multiple reports, the government has chosen the definitive name to be called GhanaAirlines and plans are underway for its launch in 2023.

A selection of names such as Akwaaba Airlines, Black Star Airlines, and Kente Airlines were also mooted as alternatives, reports GhanaWeb.

According to Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, while presenting the 2023 budget before Parliament on November 24, 2022, he said, “Shareholders and partnership agreements were signed with the selected strategic partner for the home-based carrier, which will be known as GhanaAirlines. The airline is expected to be operationalised in 2023.”

GhanaWeb reports that Ashanti Airlines, owned by a serial entrepreneur Osei Kwame Despite and Ernest Ofori-Sarpong, is finalising financial arrangements for a 2023 launch.

Government officials last year signed letters of intent to purchase six De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400s and three Boeing 787-9s for the proposed national airline.

The country Ghana has been without a national carrier since the collapse of Ghana Airways jn 2004 and the subsequent collapse of Ghana International Airlines 2010
