I work for a U.S. major airline and we do not.
In most cases, the flight attendants and pilots split up and go to different hotels. In many cases, we fly with different flight attendants the next morning so we say goodbye in the evening.
I think it has a lot to do with different union contracts and different duty regulations and of course different schedules. In some small cities, we still stay at the same place but it doesn’t happen very much in my experience.
It wasn’t always this way. In the pre-computer generated schedule days, we flew the entire month with the same flight attendants at the same hotels. It was nice to get to know them and work together for a month. Of course, it could also be terrible if they weren’t very nice or we had some personality conflicts. I kind of liked it better and I also think it was a little safer because we knew each other and we had a good idea of who was kind of easily excited and who would be cool and dependable in an evacuation. That said, I trust the flight attendants to do a good job in that department.
I also think the pilots wanted to stay at different hotels at the behest of their wives. There is rumor the pilot wives committee had a lot to do with the change but I didn’t even know there was such a thing. It’s probably not true.
It’s kind of strange to pick up all new flight attendants on every leg of the trip. I feel kind of disconnected from them and I liked it better when I got to know them as people.
