Can airline pilots refuse to take a plane into the air that they deem unsafe without serious repercussions?

At any reputable company the answer is: Absolutely yes!

But watch out on the cheap ones.

I got hired at the tail end of a hiring window and my best friend left the Air Force three months later. He was too late to get hired at a major airline, so he had to fly for a little commuter airline until the majors started hiring again.

Their planes were a maintenance nightmare and he faced constant pressure to take planes that he’d rather not fly.

After a few encounters with management he finally just turned down a plane and stood his ground. The chief pilot came out and told him to his face that if he didn’t fly that plane they would call someone who would. He said, “Okay.” And left.

That little airline was soon out of business.
